The college experience has come a long way since those on record. Today, students from colleges based in the north, south, east and west, in spite of their differences, especially in culture, are able to access a number of dedicated facilities that enable them to make the most of the advanced and enhanced education possible, within their financial means. There is no dearth of facilities available and the accessibility of these resources is amazing. There are dedicated online and offline resources that are gaining popularity today as primary resources. They help students and parents from across the globe to access and take advantage of in-house or on-campus college facilities, as well as those made available off campus or via distant education. The college rankings also take into consideration college football records and college humor sites accessible.

College rankings vary from special sports to dedicated education based rankings that appeal to and captivate those who view the facilities as per the ranks awarded. It is so natural for anyone to want their favorite team or college to be the best, and of course, every parent wants their child to be a part of only the best college or university that their money can afford. While on one hand various college sports teams can compete on the playing field to define the better team, institutions of higher education or colleges are rarely found to have any commonly agreed upon ranking measures that allow any comparison. The comparisons in question could be with regards to the teaching methods and faculty or the time tired and carefully compiled research programs.

There is an undeniable and overwhelming variety in the size and purpose of colleges. This makes the unbiased prospect of comparing colleges a daunting one. The task is as difficult for the students and parents, as it is for the college-boards and affiliates themselves. For many years now, various college-associated and individual bodies have undertaken special statistical and popularity rankings of colleges. They have attempted to provide information to prospective students who access the faculties beyond any geographical constraints. The subsequent importance in the validity of college rankings is a much debated issue, worldwide. There are a number of universities around the world who are beginning to question the sources of the statistical data collected and the methods adopted by some of the established ranking services. There is special emphasis on the aspect of the ranking which deals directly and ventures to put on record the very sensitive institutional reputation.

There are a number of dedicated ranking services that strive to find solutions to discussions on the ongoing controversy over rankings.

The listings in no way constitute to any endorsement of any particular ranking service, either by the education and social sciences departments or any of the universities. The purpose of the endeavor is to draw statistics and data together and provide the required context to various ranking services. The information is expected to improve user knowledge on rankings and enable the enhanced use of the services provided. There are dedicated caution and controversy pages within the ranking services and bibliography that further enhances the service. The UIUC Office of Public Affairs has now compiled a publication of rankings of the various UIUC affiliated and accredited departments.
